The visually impaired

ACCESSIBILITY AT STOPS

  • Information in Braille at the stop.
  • NAVILENS system. Installed at the Bilbao and Vitoria-Gasteiz tramway stops. This solution is based on a new signage (similar to QR) where passengers can use a mobile device with a camera and internet connect to read signs from afar and in any type of lighting or reading angle. Among other things, it is digital signage that is accessible to everyone, can be updated in real time and remotely; it is available in 33 languages, including in Basque, which only requires the AhoTTS application, a text-to-voice conversion system developed by the Aholab research group at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU), to be downloaded. Once installed in the mobile telephone and with the application open, the QR codes can be read by a person when moving and they therefore do not need to be carrying their mobile. The reading ability has a range of up to 20 metres and without needing to focus. Anybody interested in trying this initiative should first download, free of charge, the NaviLens app. The application is available for IOS and Android.
