ETS and Euskotren to run a rail replacement bus service from 15 September, due to the disruptions for work on the Aia/Orio – San Pelaio section
- The work to shore up the Zudugarai tunnel in Aia and overseen by Euskal Trenbide Sarea-Basque Railway Network (ETS) will require a replacement bus service from 15 September to 4 October.
The shoring-up works that Euskal Trenbide Sarea (ETS) has to carry out to the Zudugarai tunnel, in the Aia municipal district, will disrupt the rail service between the Aia-Orio and San Pelaio (Zarautz) stations from 15 September to 4 October, both inclusive. During the works, ETS and Euskotren will run a replacement service with buses running between both stations.
The replacement service on the closed section will be:
MONDAY TO FRIDAYS (BUSINESS DAYS)
• Journeys towards Donostia/San Sebastián (with destination any station after San Pelaio): when you arrive at San Pelaio station, transfer to a bus to continue the journey to your end destination.
• Journeys towards Bilbao (with destination any station after Aia/Orio): when you arrive at Aia/Orio station, transfer to a bus to continue to the end destination in Eibar. At Eibar station, transfer to continue by train again towards Bilbao.
SATURDAYS AND SUNDAYS
• Journeys towards Donostia/San Sebastián (with the destination any station after San Pelaio): When you arrive at San Pelaio station, transfer to a bus to continue the journey to Aia/Orio. Once you arrive in Aia/Orio, transfer to continue by train again towards Donostia/San Sebastián.
• Journeys towards Bilbao (with the destination any station after Aia/Orio): When you arrive at Aia/Orio station, transfer to a bus to continue to the end destination in Eibar. Once you arrive at Eibar station, transfer to continue by train again towards Bilbao.
The bus stops for the replacement service are as follows: Aia/Orio (bus stop near to the station next to the Arin y Embil furniture store) and San Pelaio (urban bus stop, next to the Bomberos roundabouts).
Passengers can get off the bus at the following stops:
1. Between Zarautz and Eibar:
- San Pelaio (Zarautz): Pilartxo-enea bus stop.
- Zarautz: Nafarroa Kalea-Gurutze Gorria bus stop.
- Zumaia: Next to the station.
- Arroa (Zumaia): N-634 ‘Arroabea’ bus stop.
- Deba: N-634, next to the station
- Mendaro: Bus stop next to ‘Zubia’ station.
- Altzola (Elgoibar): N-634 bus stop, next to the halt.
- Toletxegain (Elgoibar): N-634 ‘Mupen’ bus stop (next to J. Larrañaga, S.L. garage).
- Elgoibar: ‘Barrio Sigma 2’ bus stop.
- Azitain (Eibar): Next to the Azitain petrol station.
- Eibar: Estaziño kalea, next to the station.
2. Between Orio and Donostia/San Sebastián:
- Orio: N-634 bus stop, next to the station
- Usurbil: N-634 bus stop, next to the station
- Errekalde (Donostia/San Sebastián): GI-2132 bus stop, next to the station).
- Añorga (Donostia/San Sebastián): GI-21 ‘Añorga Txiki II’ bus stop, before the roundabout.
- Lugaritz (Donostia/San Sebastián): ‘Lugaritz Euskotren’ bus stop, next to the station.
Trains will run at their usual times between San Pelaio (Zarautz) and Bilbao, and between Aia/Orio and Donostia/San Sebastián.
The following should be taken into account when travelling by bus:
• PRM: People who are differently abled and with special transport needs can phone 943504350 to prepare their journey.
• Journey planning: Users should take into account that the arrival time at their final destination depends on the state of the traffic.
• Pets: Only dogs with muzzles are allowed to travel.
The Zudugarai tunnel on the Bilbao-San Sebastián line is 740 metres long and has a single track. The work will basically consist of using sprayed concrete and bolts to strengthen a section.
