Children up to their 12th birthday will need to validated their travel card on the Vitoria-Gasteiz tramway
From Monday 2 February, children up to their 12th birthday will have to validate their travel card before getting on the Vitoria-Gasteiz trams, now that the adaptation period and the work to alter the validation system for free child travel have ended.
Since 7 January, children up to their 12th birthday have been able to travel free on the Vitoria-Gasteiz tramway service, managed by Euskotren, a publicly-owned company belonging to the Basque Government's Ministry of Sustainable Mobility. A temporary adaptation period started on 7 January to take out the individual travel cards; during that time the beneficiaries of this measure could travel free without any validation, provided that proof of age could by produced when requested by any member of the tramway staff. All the public transport operators of Álava have offered free travel to children up to their 12th birthday since 7 January.
Once the adaptation period is over, from Monday 3 February, the under 12s are going to need to travel with their individual travel card, validated before starting each journey, as other tram passengers must do; authorisation is needed for children when they travel by themselves (the authorisation form can be downloaded by www.euskotren.eus). As is the case with all individual travel cards, passengers will need to produce the ID or the family record book to check their identity if necessary.
The individual BAT cards are available from the Vitoria-Gasteiz Tramway's Customer Information Office. The office is at 9 Calle Sancho El Sabio. Its current opening hours is from 8.00 a.m. to 7.30 p.m. from Monday to Friday.
Up until 7 January 2025, free travel was available for the under 6s, except on the Vitoria-Gasteiz urban buses (Tuvisa) that already had free travel for under 12s.
Extending free travel for children up to their 12th birthday will take pressure off family budgets; it will also encourage the younger generation to get into the habit of sustainable mobility, as an additional step to tackle the climate change challenge. Starting Thursday 30 January, this age group can travel free on all Euskotren means of transport in Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa, as well as on the Vitoria-Gasteiz tramway.
