The Euskotren Board of Directors approves the 50% discount on its services from 1 September
During its meeting on Wednesday 27 July, the Euskotren Board of Directors approved the application of the 50% discount on its train, tram and funicular services from 1 September, in accordance with the Spanish Government’s legislative royal decree regulating the public transport discounts in response to the crisis of the war in Ukraine and the rise in prices.
As Iñaki Arriola, the Basque Government’s Minister for Territorial Planning, Housing and Transport and Chair of Euskotren, explained, this approval “is an important step forward for the public to benefit from a 50% discount on their journeys during the last four months of the year; a green and social measure that will benefit everyone, particularly the middle classes and workers; and it is aimed at promoting public transport, discouraging the use of private vehicles and also to reduce CO2 emissions”.
The Euskotren services will apply the maximum discount to the fares, by taking up the direct subsidies that the Royal Decree establishes for the entities that apply 30% discounts and the additional 20% that the Basque Government will provide from its budget.
The temporary fare discounts will apply to the following means of transport operated by Euskotren:
• The five railway lines (E1, E2. E3, E4, E5)
• Line 3 of the subway in Bilbao
• The Bilbao and Vitoria-Gasteiz tramways
• The Larreineta funicular railway
The discount will be automatically applied to the Barik, Bat and Mugi contactless cards. The 50% discount will also be applied to monthly season ticket for the Larreineta funicular railway and the 10-trip ticket for the Kukullaga lift, even if they are bought without the card.
